God’s Glory And Goodness

Introduction

‘His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.’ 2 Peter 1:3-4

In the above text, the Apostle Peter showed that God called us by His own glory and goodness, through which He has also given us great and precious promises. God’s intention is for us to share in the divine nature because He has enabled us to escape the corruption in the world through the sanctifying work of His Spirit.

The death of Christ on the cross, His burial and His resurrection (i.e. the gospel) made this possible and this explains why Paul told the Christians at Thessalonica that they were called through the gospel.

In Psalm 34:8, David says: ‘Taste and see that the Lord is good’. Again, in Psalm 100, the Psalmist says: ‘For the Lord is good and His love endures forever….’ Through His love, He gave His only Son to die in our stead that we might be saved and participate in His divine nature. Peter also reaffirmed this in his first letter.

In 1 Peter 2:3, he says we have tasted and seen that the Lord is good! Indeed, the Lord is good all the time. Let’s remember that the Lord saved us from the wrath to come, by His glory and goodness and therefore we should in thankful obedience, never depart from Him and refrain from taking His goodness for granted.

‘But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.’ 2 Thessalonians 2:13-15
