The Christian Husband

Introduction

I’m going to share a story with you and then you have to guess what the point of the story is.

A police car pulled alongside a speeding car on the freeway. Glancing at the car, he was astounded to see that the woman behind the wheel was knitting! Realising that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, the policeman cranked down his window, turned on his bullhorn and yelled, ‘pullover!’ the woman yelled back, ‘no, it’s a scarf!’

Whose got the point of the story?

The point of the story is, ‘despite what the world thinks, men and woman are different and think differently.’

What are some of the things that prevent a man being a good Christian husband?

He may be very lazy and not willing to help his wife around the house or help with the children. Maybe he doesn’t know or understand his Christian role as husband.

What can help a man fulfil his role as a good Christian husband?

Bible study will certainly help him understand his role. Good communication between himself and his wife and children will also help. Being a good example in the home not just at church and supporting his wife will help him too.

Let me share with you another story and then you have to guess what the point of the story is.

There were two archaeologists who went in a tomb where they discovered a mummy. So, they decided to unwrap it, they started with the head, so when they finally unwrapped the head. They couldn’t believe their eyes; they had never seen a face so depressed looking in all their lives. So they wondered why it was like this, so they unwrapped the rest of the body, they noticed that the persons hand was clenched, so slowly they began to prize open the fingers, when they found a piece of paper inside the hand. They opened it and they discovered that it was a betting slip, and on it, it said, ‘200 shekels on Goliath to win.’

Whose got the point of the story?

The point is, ‘we may face many challenges as Christian husbands today but we shouldn’t bet against God helping them tomorrow’.

What are some of the challenges that Christian husbands face today?

Balancing work and home is always a factor and bringing their children up in the Lord can be a huge challenge for both parents.

How can Christians husbands overcome these challenges?

They need to have some family fun time together, whether it’s a day out or a holiday together. Studying the Bible together, along with some prayer time together will help.

‘For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Saviour.’ Ephesians 5:23

I believe that husbands would be better Christian husbands if they understood their role within the marriage. You see, Christ, whether people like it or not rules over His church and He has the right to lay down the way in which He wants His church to function as a church.

And the same is said of a marriage. The husband has this God given role and he has the right to suggest to his family how the home is going to function as a godly home.

However, the husband doesn’t have the right to just sit back and watch how well his home is functioning. The Christian husband has a higher calling than that; his duty goes far beyond just giving the orders and doing church work as some say.

‘Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.’ Ephesians 5:25

What a high calling we have as Christian husbands and when it comes to loving our wives, isn’t it good to know that you can never love her too much?

And when you think about it, what woman in today’s world wouldn’t want to be loved like Christ loved His church?

Jesus suffered and died on the cross for His church, so husbands need to suffer and be willing to die for their wives. It is the Christian husband’s role to keep his wife’s supported and provide for her needs. And sometimes that means not getting any rest, if that’s what it takes to keep her happy.

That means to look after her when she’s sick and make sure she doesn’t get involved with anything that might cost her, her soul. That means being willing to die to save her and to help her to remain faithful to the Lord, all of her life.

What a high calling that is! What a challenge that is! What a difference that can make in your home, with your wife and your children.

Imagine when worldly women ask our Christian wives, ‘why does your husband help you with the ironing and hoovering?’ She will answer by saying, ‘because he loves me, like Christ loves me.’

Imagine when your worldly neighbour ask our Christians wives, ‘how come I never hear you and your husband fighting in the middle of the night?’ She can say, ‘because we fight through the day’. No! she can say, ‘because my husband takes time to listen to me and he values my opinion’.

Imagine the impact that will have on your children and their friends and family when a wordily family asks your wife, ‘have you never been tempted to have an affair with someone else?’ And your wife says, ‘well, I could never find someone else who understands me and loves me as much as he does, because they love me like Christ loves His church.’

Let me encourage you to be the best husband, any wife could ever want and be pleasing to God.

‘I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.’ Song Of Solomon 6:3
